The short versionYour golf records and setup are stored locally in the current app. Connected features can send course searches or geographic information to external services. The app and this website do not include advertising or analytics trackers. Local storage does not mean the app never uses the internet.

1. Who we are and what this covers

Golf PinTheory (also displayed as PinTheory) is developed by FairwayVector, operated by Contrain in Sweden. This policy covers the current iOS app and this information website. For information for which we determine the purposes and means of processing, Contrain is the data controller. Contact us at hello@fairwayvector.com.

External providers also process information under their own terms and privacy policies. Features and providers available to you depend on the app version, configuration, permissions, and course coverage.

2. Information on your device

The app saves information you enter or generate while using its tools. Depending on the features you use, this can include:

  • Golf profile and setup: player details you enter, handicap information, clubs, wedge carry distances, launch inputs, and preferences such as units.
  • Rounds and scores: saved scorecards, drafts, player names you enter, round history, statistics, and handicap records.
  • Course and planning data: recent selections, custom courses or flag positions, downloaded course information, and cached weather and terrain responses. Planning data may contain geographic coordinates.

These records are stored using the app’s local databases, preferences, and files. The current app does not offer user-facing sign-in or account-based cloud synchronization. This is separate from any device backup or transfer features you enable through Apple.

3. Location permissions

If you allow location access, the app uses your location while in use for your position on the course, GPS distances, and shot planning. You can decline permission or change it in iOS Settings. Features that rely on your position will then be limited.

A captured position may become part of a planned shot. When live terrain retrieval is enabled, coordinates along that shot’s path, including its origin, may be sent to the elevation provider. Map services may also process location-related information. We do not use your location for targeted advertising.

4. Connected services and information shared

The app uses or supports the services below to provide maps, course data, weather, and elevation. A request also exposes ordinary connection metadata, such as your IP address, to the service receiving it. Not every service is contacted during every use.

Apple Maps / MapKit
Displays course maps and imagery, and can display your position. Apple processes map-service requests and related information under its privacy policy.
Open-Meteo
Receives the selected course’s coordinates and weather parameters to return local weather. The weather request is based on the course location, not a continuous upload of your live GPS position. See Open-Meteo’s terms and privacy information.
Golf API
When live course-data access is enabled, receives course or club search text, country or region filters, selected course identifiers, and update-check information. These requests do not include your scorecards or golf profile. Provider information is available at golfapi.io.
GPXZ
When live elevation access is enabled, receives coordinate paths and sampling parameters to return terrain elevations. A path can include a captured golfer position, target, or flag. Provider information is available at gpxz.io.
OpenStreetMap / Overpass
Supported course-discovery paths may send course-name searches, map area identifiers, or bounding boxes to public Overpass servers, including overpass-api.de and overpass.openstreetmap.fr. See the OpenStreetMap Foundation’s privacy policy; individual server operators may have additional practices.

Golf API and GPXZ can operate with demonstration or cached data instead of live requests. Map imagery and weather are separate services and may still use the network. External providers control their own retention and processing practices; consult their current notices. Processing may take place outside your country, including outside the EEA. Contact us if you need information about a particular data flow or applicable transfer safeguards.

5. This website, cookies, and contact

This website does not use analytics, advertising scripts, tracking pixels, third-party fonts, or application cookies. Images and styling are served with the site. Its hosting provider may process IP addresses, request times, requested pages, and browser or connection information to deliver and secure the website. Hosting practices depend on where the site is deployed.

If hosted on GitHub Pages, GitHub processes visitor information as described in the GitHub General Privacy Statement. Following an external link takes you to a separate service governed by its own policy.

If you email us, we receive the address and information you include, and use them to respond and handle your request. Please do not send passwords, payment information, or unnecessary sensitive information.

6. Purposes and legal bases

Where the GDPR applies, we rely on the following bases as appropriate to the processing involved:

  • Providing requested functionality: processing needed to deliver the app or a feature you request is based on performing our agreement with you.
  • Optional access: we request your permission before accessing device location. Where consent is the applicable legal basis, you can withdraw it without affecting earlier lawful processing. Device permission is also an operating-system control, not a blanket consent to unrelated uses.
  • Support and security: our legitimate interests in answering inquiries, maintaining service security, and addressing misuse, balanced against your rights.
  • Legal obligations: where applicable law requires us to retain or disclose information.

We do not sell your personal information or use it for cross-app advertising tracking. Shot calculations and projections are informational tools, not decisions producing legal or similarly significant effects about you.

7. Storage, retention, and security

Local golf records generally remain on your device until you remove them through an available app control or remove the app and its data. iOS offloading may retain app data. Cached files can remain until replaced or removed. Deleting the app does not necessarily remove copies in your device backups; manage those separately through Apple’s controls.

Device backups may include app data depending on your settings. There is no current PinTheory account backup or multi-device sync service, so do not rely on the app as your only copy of important records.

We retain support correspondence only as long as needed to handle the inquiry and any related legitimate or legal requirements. External services and the hosting provider apply their own retention periods. There is no single retention period that covers all of these independently operated systems.

The app uses platform storage mechanisms and HTTPS for the external requests described here. No storage system or transmission method can be guaranteed completely secure.

8. Your choices and privacy rights

You can change location permissions in iOS Settings, review or remove records using available app controls, and remove locally held app data through your device. We cannot remotely access or erase records that exist only on your device.

Depending on your location and applicable law, you may have rights to access, correct, erase, restrict, or obtain a portable copy of personal information we hold about you, and to object to certain processing. You may also withdraw consent where processing relies on it. These rights are subject to applicable conditions and exceptions.

To exercise a right or ask a question, email hello@fairwayvector.com. We may need proportionate information to verify your request. You may complain to a supervisory authority, including Sweden’s Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten (IMY), or your local authority.

9. Children’s privacy

The app and website are not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly solicit personal information from children under 13 through our support channels. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, contact us so we can address it. Local age and parental-consent requirements may differ.

10. Changes and contact

We will update this page when the policy changes and revise the date above. Material changes, such as the introduction of accounts or cloud synchronization, should be explained before those features begin processing your information.

For privacy questions, contact FairwayVector / Contrain at hello@fairwayvector.com. See also our Terms of Service.
